The Story Behind the Origin of April Fool’s Day:

It is said that April Fool’s day was first marked in the 19th century, and then went on to grow immensely accepted universally.

It was Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales (1392) where the first antecedent of the day was found in writing. In this tale, a vain rooster named Chauntecleer is fooled by a fox, which is taken as a patron to this day.

There are many other famous references for April Fool’s Day in the literature that indicates that the first of April had a purpose back in the past.

The French poet Eloy d’Amerval referred to Poisson d’avril (Which literally means “April fish”), a conceivable reference to the holiday.

In 1539, Eduard de Dene also mentioned a nobleman who enjoyed sending his servants on foolish errands on April 1st of every year.

Interestingly, some evidence of this day traces back to the Roman carnival of Hilaria and even to the celebration of the Holi festival in India, and the Medieval Feast of Fools.

April Fool’s day is tremendously popular in countries like Canada, Europe, Australia, Brazil and the United States, where practical jokes, pranks and tricks are played upon each other to celebrate this day. This is why the first of April sees people playing harmless pranks on each other.
